Workshops

It's not just about standing and watching – it's about being part of it - so get inspired and take part in creative workshops and discussions from noon-5pm at East Oxford Community Centre.

These included:

  • VIDEOGRAPHY - Work with local filmmaker Jon Spira, to make a music video
  • DESIGN AN ALBUM SLEEVE- Join with Creative Arts Gallery to design the album sleeve for the new Magic Numbers LP
  • SCREENPRINTING- Work with local printmaker, Lewis Saunders, to make a screen printed poster
  • SCRIPTWRITING- Write a script with local writer, Noel White 
  • LIVE MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY- Get tips and talk with photographer, Louise Roberts, about her experience in the industry. The first 10 people to sign up get a photo pass for the event!
  • DESIGN & WRITE YOUR OWN FANZINE- The Gloom Brothers, creators of Circuit,  offer their expertise
  • BAND SPEED DATING- Meet and greet with local promoter and networking genuis, Drew Brammer
  • MIX TAPE AMNESTY- Open your ears up to new music -bring along a mix tape or cd and swap it with a stranger to see what the other half listens to

THE UN-CONVENTION

If you’re a musician, a promoter, a record label, or if you’re interested in how things happen in music today, you won’t want to miss Oxford’s first Un-convention. It’s all included in the price of your OX4 wristband. This your chance to listen to some top industry experts as well as tell them what you think!

We’re delighted to announce that Un-Convention will be hosting two afternoon discussions at East Oxford Community Centre on Saturday 10th October at OX4.In the spirit of UN-CONVENTION, we’re delighted to announce that the discussion will be chaired by legendary punk musician and author John Robb, (who has previously played solo and with his band Gold Blade at TRUCK). Featuring panellists John Robb, Mark Gardener, Pat Fulgoni, Steve Lawson, Mike McNally, and Tim Turan.

Panel 1: 12.30 – 2pm

Young & Talented; why that might not be enough to make a living out of music, and what else you might do. 

  • The feasibility of having a career as a musician.
  • Looking at alternative ways of making a living as a musician (teaching, journalism, promoting, etc.)
  • Ideas outside the playing live and selling records model
     

Panel 2: 3pm – 4.30pm

Keep It Local / Made In OX4: how the future of the music industry could be in regional clusters. The potential for nurturing / recording / promoting talent at a regional level.

  • Is the relevant media still ‘Londoncentric’
  • Scenes, and fanzines.
